      <image:title>Tudor Gown - Inspiration Image</image:title>
<image:caption>Queen Catherine Parr, by Master John, 1545 This portrait demonstrates the conical silhouette of the first half of the 16th century. The bust is high and the skirt is wide. The front of the underskirt is decorative and often a tied or pinned on triangular piece rather than a full skirt. The over sleeves, often lined in fur or velvet are folded back to display a set of large decorative foresleeves which tie into the gown’s oversleeve.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tudor Gown - Undergarments</image:title>
<image:caption>This image, drawn by Jean Hunnisett, shows the common undergarments of the period. The upper body and bust were supported by a set of stays, or pair of bodies. The purpose of this garment was support rather than constriction. The skirt is supported by a conical Spanish farthingale. The boning used in these garments was often bundles of thin reeds, called bents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The robe à la française relied on a very specific kind of skirt support called a pannier. These came in several shapes and sizes. Some were large and encircled the whole lower body extending to the mid-calf or ankle. Others, such as those pictured above took the form or pocket hoops, and were smaller and much easier to wear. The stays of the period lifted the bust and formed the upper body into a triangular shape.</image:caption>

The yellow dress in this fashion illustration depicts the Robe de Style, which adheres to the dropped waist of the 1920s, while providing fullness at the side of the hips and more yardage in the skirt. The skirts were often supported with small paniers much like the fashions of the 18th century.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wedding Ensemble - Inspirational Image Front View</image:title>
<image:caption>This ensemble, possibly of French origin, is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Very little is known about its designer, maker, or original use. I have suggested its use as a wedding ensemble. Following the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, the white wedding gown for the wealthy became increasingly popular. Most fashionable weddings were held in the morning, so the elbow length sleeves and high neckline would be appropriate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wedding Ensemble - Inspirational Image Side View</image:title>
<image:caption>The train, while popular for fashionable dresses was appropriate for any time of day, could be looped up to a shorter length for walking. Its released length coupled with a day bodice, however, leads me to believe that this was a special occasion dress, most likely for a wedding. The train would have been supported and protected by a removable dust ruffle called a balayeuse. This would be made from a harder wearing and washable fabric, and would either button or tack into the train. It would also add weight to the train, keeping it appropriately spread out and assist with movement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wedding Ensemble - Inspirational Image Back View</image:title>

      <image:title>Wedding Ensemble - Undergarment</image:title>
<image:caption>The late 1860s into the mid 1870s was a transitional period in silhouette and decoration. The round hoops of the early 1860s began to shift toward the back becoming more elliptical, and by the early 1870s became a highly structured bustle with lower round hoops to support the skirt hem. Decoratively, more ruffles, pleating, flounces, and bows began to fill the expanse of the skirt. Drawing from Norah Waugh’s book, Coresets and Crinolines.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the 1830s skirts began to expand in volume and needed support. Multiple stiffly starched petticoats could be worn as could a corded petticoat, as shown above. The stays of the period lowered and separated the bust by means of a stiff busk. It was still a supportive garment. Sleeves of the period ballooned to huge proportions and also needed support. These supports took the form of pillows or small cages that tied to the straps of the stays.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We associate this period and style most readily with the novels of Jane Austin, but it is most importantly a time of accelerating industrialization, colonization and exploitation. Printed cottons and muslins became more readily available using raw materials from the Indian subcontinent and from the slave states of the American south. We must acknowledge the horrors of colonization and slavery as an important context of fashion history.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mourning Dress - Historical Image</image:title>
<image:caption>19th century American mourning customs followed those of England and had evolved into a complex set of rules, especially involving dress. Women, particularly those of the upper classes, were socially required to wear black clothing and veils. For a widow, full black mourning was expected for a minimum of four years when they would enter “half mourning” and be permitted to wear muted colors such as grey and lavender.</image:caption>
