Worn over a hoopskirt, or cage crinoline, a small support pad, and a muslin petticoat trimmed in lace. Inspired by a pattern in Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion 2 of a trousseau dress dated 1864, held in the collections of the Gallery of English Costume, Manchester, UK.

As the width and volume of skirts continued to expand throughout the 19th century they needed support. In 1856 the circular crinoline or hoopskirt became available and replaced the usual layers of stiffened petticoats.
