In her Patterns of Fashion series, Janet Arnold intricately measured and examined extant historical garments and produced detailed gridded patterns.
Although of a slightly later date (1878-1880), this princess line dress held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum shows a similar use of horizontal ruching, as well as the slim frontal view of the period.
